BOAT

In making the Hard Edge/Object Paintings I first start with a mock-up. I tape or glue cut-outs (painted or found-colour papers I cut into a shape) (or “off-cuts” from previous cut-out shapes) onto white paper making a composition.  I choose from those, some are duds. I also crop a section of some. Then, I will modify and add to that as I paint the mock-up or crop. During execution of the paintings from the mock-ups, things can change. Boat remained referential to its source but I added some more elements. To me, taking a boat trip is a metaphor for accepting risk or at least, letting oneself be transported somewhere else, having some adventure and being less in control of things.
