flat earth

2012

I found the rectangular particle board sheet on the beach of Vancouver Island somewhere, a long time ago. I concluded it to be a boat’s hatchway cover you would slide in place in rough weather at sea. I followed my practice of adhering cut pieces of cloth tape in primary colours, to found materials, to the hatchway, in shapes suggestive of things distant, fragments, language, etc. Displaying the hatchway cover uses found materials also of wood. I thought the idea could be that the cover, constituting flotsam found resting on the beach after floating maybe for days or weeks at sea, could be a representation of the Earth, as understood by people who believe the Earth is flat.
